Handy cleaners to have in the kitchen for all types of cleanups are Baking soda, Bleach, Hydrogen Peroxide, Lemons, Salt and Vinegar. Make sure chemicals are out of reach from children. Store the cleaning products away from groceries.
Don't throw away your used Fabric Softener sheets. They are unbelievably useful to have around the house. Start to store them in a clean zip lock bag and we will be back really soon with several uses for them....!
For clean Sinks:
Once a month, pour one cup of baking soda, followed by one cup of white vinegar down the drain. Wait an hour and flush with warm water. The ombination fizzles away most of the buildup. Works for shower, tub and kitchen sink drains as well.
Plastic shower curtain shower mildew:
Toss it into the washing machine with laundry soap and two or three bath towels for friction, hang it up, and it will look like new again.
Portable humidifier:
Keep the reservoir of the humidifier clean by adding 1/4 cup Vinegar to the water once every week.
Got dirty pillows:
Put them in the washer. Foam pillows should be air dried. Feather and down pillows can be put in the dryer with a couple of Tennis balls to fluff them up.
Clean Tablecloth:
Spray starch your table cloth every time you wash them. Once you dry your table cloth, spray starch them liberally, iron and put over the table. It will prevent stains from sticking to them.
To clean your keyboard:
First shut the computer off, vaccum the dust by soft-bristled attachment. Wipe down the keys with a fabric softener sheet so it will reduce the dust build up. You can also alcohol wipes on keyboard and phones to look new and shiny.
Cleaning brushes and combs:
Make it a point to clean them at least once in 2 weeks. For stuck on dirt, soak them in soapy warm water and rinse it off using an old tooth brush. Synchronize your shampooing day with your comb cleaning day, that way both your hair and the comb or brush you use are clean.
To clean Mini-blinds:
Wipe down mini-blinds with a damp fabric softener sheet. This eliminates the static that causes dust to stick. The same trick works for TV and monitor screens.
Unbelievable uses for some simple household products:
1) Coffee powder: Try coffee grounds to keep your refrigerator smelling nice and fresh, just as you do with an open box of baking soda. Place them, new or used, in a bowl and remember to replace them every month or two.
2) Ice cubes: Use ice to cleanse the blades in your garbage disposal and break up the grease that collects on the rotors. Every few weeks, toss in a handful of cubes, turn on the disposal and run cold water. Add some orange, lemon or lime peels to ward off odors.
3) Newspaper: To absorb grime, cover the bottom of your trash can with old newspapers. It's an easy way to keep clean and soaks up leaks and odors.
4) Dryer sheets: Used dryer sheets doesn't have to be thrown out. They can used to deodorize garbage bins. Once you empty out the old bag line the used dryer sheets and put the plastic bag on top. Now, you have the entire restroom smelling fresh. Use them inside the shoe boxes and in the shoe rack.
5) Vinegar: Here are some of the general uses for vinegar. It is a must have in every kitchen. Its an 'all in all' in every kitchen starting from cooking to cleaning and much more..so you be the judge...Here comes the uses...Drain Cleaner, Microwave Oven Cleaner, Dishwasher Rinse Agent, Grease Remover, Toilet Bowl Cleaner, Mold & Mildew Remover, Mineral Deposit Remover, All-Purpose Cleaner, Carpet Cleaner Recipes, Furniture Polish, Frugal Air Freshener, Frugal Laundry Booster, Laundry Stain Remover, Wool Wash, Laundry Suds Control, Crayon Remover, Stainless Steel Cleaner, Clean Window Blinds, Eyeglass Cleaner, Copper and Brass Tarnish Remover, Fruit and Vegetable Wash, Sponge Sanitizer,
Glass Cleaner, Fabric Softener, DVD/CD Cleaner.
Did you know White vinegar is the best remedy to get rid of lice in your hair? Its true, Stop spending money on all the expensive and toxic lice treatments. Soak a good sized towel in Vinegar (Yes, I know, it stinks but there is no alternative like this one!) wrap it around your head. Put a shower cap on top of that and go to sleep. Next morning, go to the bathroom tub to remove the towel and there you will see all the dead lice. Clean it up with hot water and wash the towel in the washer w some vinegar and baking soda.
Preventive Measures
If you have a front loading washer, leave the door open so that the inside dries well. This will prevent the machine from getting musty.
Food service Green Tip: Did you know that pouring lemon juice around areas that ants frequent is said to repel them?
Emergency cleaning hints
1. Spilled coffee or water on the key board, disconnect it and turn in upside down and wipe it down and let it dry for at least 24-48 hrs before plugging it. You can even try blow drying it at cool setting when its unplugged.
2. To clean your wooden or plastic cutting board, scrub the surface with a brush dipped in a solution made with 1 Tbls bleach diluted in 2 quarts (2 liters) water. Scrub in small circles, and be careful not to saturate the wood. Wipe with a slightly damp paper towel, then immediately buff dry with a clean cloth. If its a plastic cutting board, you can leave it for a few minutes and then rinse it thoroughly with hot water.
3. Smelly hands or cutting boards, lemon juice can fix it. Use it after chopping onions, crushing garlic, after cutting raw, cooked meat, chicken or sea food. To get rid of the smell and help sanitize the cutting board, rub it all over with the cut side of half a lemon or wash it in undiluted bottled juice.
